Brea Receives Grant for
Family Services Program

The Brea Family Services program has been awarded a $22,500 grant from the Sisters of St. Joseph Healthcare Foundation. The grant was awarded to Brea, in part, because the program is a collaborative effort by the Brea Community Services Department and several local non-profit agencies. With these funds, the Family Services program will move to the new Community Center this summer. Several new services will be added and existing services for families will be expanded.

New Programs

• Counseling services for families and youth by Straight Talk Inc., a non-profit agency serving Orange County over 20 years. Fees set on a sliding scale based on the ability to pay.
• Parenting classes.
• Support group for teen parents.
• Youth Employment Service. Free service to help teens and young adults find employment, develop job readiness skills and learn interview techniques.

Expanded Services

  • Information and referral service to link families with needed resorces. For example, assisting families find help for specific problems.
The Brea Family Services program is designed to expand and change along with the needs of our community. Brea's 16-member Youth and Family Advisory Council will help establish priorities and keep services in tune with community needs. According to Advisory Council member Pat Fox, "These grant funds allow us to offer new youth programs at the Community Center, which are a keystone of the youth and family services program. The grant also gives legitimacy to the program developed by community volunteers and staff."
