Telegraph Canyon

Whether you are a hiker, horseman, or mountain biker, nearly 8 miles of superb scenery are yours to enjoy on this one-way trek over the Chino Hills. Telegraph Canyon is long enough, wild enough, and beautiful enough (especially in its upper reaches) to provide a close approximation to a true wildreness experience. Try this trip sometime on a late afternoon, after the first rains of the season, when the sun's warm rays illuminate the gold and green sycamores, and the cool breeze has a tangy, woodsy aroma.

Going east to west is slightly easier than the other way around. So set up a car shuttle (using Carbon Canyon Road), or otherwise arrange to be dropped off at the hiker's trailhead west of the Rolling M Ranch and picked up later at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.

As you make your way up the Hills for Everyone Trail to the saddle, the trail will drop down to McDermont Spring-the headwaters of Telegraph Canyon. (Note: mountain bikes and horses must use the dirt-road route just south of the Hills for Everyone Trail.) Navigational matters are very simple thereafter: just stroll down-canyon 5.4 miles on an old dirt road until you reach the fringe of an orange grove at the canyon's mouth. Here, veer right (northwest) toward Carbon Canyon Road. There you'll pick up a roadside path leading a short distance west to Carbon Canyon Regional Park's east parking lot.
