Designated California Historical Landmark #189, the site now known as Dana Point is named for the legendary Richard Henry Dana, Jr. He sailed into the harbor in 1835, as related in his autobiographical account 'Two years before the Mast'. It was here that Dana and his fellow sailors tossed hides purhased from Mission San Juan Capistrano over the steep cliffs to the ship anchored in El Embarcadero, the cove below.
