The San Mateo Wilderness was designated a wilderness in 1984. You will find over 60 miles of hiking trails. Enjoy geology, flowers and trees, birds and mammals, wonderful views, and...its solitude. Rugged mountains covered with chaparral and coastal sage dominate the landscape. One of the most attractive aspects is the many deep drainages supporting areas of lush vegetation.
