

Before buying a boat, joining a sailing club, or signing up for a Caribbean charter, find out what operating a cruiser is all about! This four-session program is designed to teach intermediate level sailors the skills needed to operate a mid-sized auxiliary cruising boat. Course topics:On Deck: Identification and operation of all deck gear including two-speed winch operaton, roller furling systems, safety gear operation, engine controls, instruments.Below Deck: Head and galley usage, 12-volt electrical system, bilge pumps, diesel engine check and review. Gear storage: what to bring - clothing, gear, food. VHF radio and Loran operation, navagation equipment needed. (Navigation not taught; consult evening classroom courses.)Underway: Docking, mooring, anchoring, rules-of-the road, sail trim, feefing, man overboard recovery, basic maneuvers under sail and power.You will practice under sail and power each session. Bring a lunch each hday. The last class will consist of local offshore cruising. The destination and details will be worked out with you and your instructor. (four class meetings).
