What Is Shark Camp? Shark camp is a family campfire program that invites the public to learn about the natural history of sharks. Are these animals really a threat to us or do they play a vital role in the marine environment? Special guest speakers will reveal the real truth about these mysterious creatures. Shark Camp teaches participants how to help to safely catch, tag and release sharks and rays. After dark, participants spend the last hour of this event fishing, catching, tagging and releasing sharks and rays at the Shellmaker Island dock.Support Groups Are Responsible For the Following:Provide a campfire dinner (hot dogs or hamburgers) plus fixings and paper goods for up to 60 participants.Help set up and take down needed equpipment for the event.Help provide safe access for participants to the fishing dock.Help monitor public safety while families fish at the dock.Help in the catching, tagging and releasing of sharks and rays.Groups interested in supporting one or more of the following Upper Newport Bay shark Camps during the year of 1998 must also attend Shark Camp Training and should call the Sea Base at 714-642-5031 or Dept. of Fish and Game at 714-640-1742.
