This course is fast-paced with lectures broken up by guest speakers, demonstrations and underway practice. The first three days of the course are spent aboard "Wide Waters" in and around Newport Harbor. Three underway sessions include individual practice in docking and maneuvering, Radar and plotting, navigating, using rules of the road and night operation. The final two days are spent on a 70-mile cruise from Newport Beach to Catalina Island via Los Angeles Harbor. The Catalina cruise provides participants with an opportunity to experience virtually all aspects of offshore poweryacht management. At Los Angeles Harbor,participants will maneuver the vessel around one of the busiest ports in the world in the world. Upon reaching Catalina Island Saturday afternoon, "Wide Waters" will be anchored or moored in a cove for the night. The vessel will get underway for Newport Beach Sunday morning, arriving back at her berth at noon. The 2nd weekend is used for the Catalina trip. Amount of time underway and night operation hours remain the same as regular course.Two consecutive weekends with the first weekend including half-day Friday. Instruction time, underway operation, lodging and meals remain the same as the five-day course. Participants may elect not to stay aboard on the first weekend, if they wish.
