Lighter-Than-Air Hangers
Type: Historical Sites
Status: Closed
Commissioned in 1942 as a naval air station, the giant twin hangers were constructed to house blimps used in anti-submarine surveillance along the Southern California coast during World War II. Among the largest unsupported wooden structures in the world, each hangar housed six airships. In 1951 the station was recommissioned as a Marine Corps Air facility devoted entirely to helicopters.
